Sushrut ( The father Of Surgery)- he is commonly credited as the writer of the thesis on ayurveda, especially on operations and surgery in Ancient Indian history. It is said that he was originally form kerala and spent his life in ancient holy city Varanasi. His era is normally assumed in between the period of 1200 BC - 600 BC. One of the initial known mentions of his name is from the Bower Manuscript written in 4th century, where he is listed as one of the ten great sages residing in Himalayas. Texts also states that he learned surgery at Kashi from Dhanvantari, who is recognized the god of medicine in Hindu mythology.
It looks that west has followed his teachings in better way than east. Sushrut was the first compiler of ancient Indian teachings about surgery. He wrote a book named Sushrut Samhita which contains all about different types surgery and including various instruments. If read carefully, Vedas include a lot about surgery but main ideas about it were found in around 3000BC.
Shushrut Samhita – The Sushruta Samhita is very significant text on medicine, basically written in Sanskrit, considered to be one of the first chief works associated to complete study of surgery and medicine. Written by Sushruta, it is usually dated to the age of the 6th century BC. It’s one of the initial texts of Ayurveda, the Indian tradition of medicines, together with the Charaka Samhita, Bhela Samhita and the medical related portions of the Bower Manuscript.
It is divided in 184 chapters and encloses descriptions of 1,120 illnesses, 700 medicinal plants, 64 preparations from mineral sources and 57 preparations based on animal sources. The content confers surgical techniques of making incisions, probing, extraction of foreign bodies, thermal and alkali cauterization, excisions, tooth extraction and trocars for draining abscess, draining hydroelectric and ascetic fluid, the removal of the prostate gland, vesiculolithotomy, urethral stricture dilatation, caesarian section, hernia surgery, management of hemorrhoids, laparotomy, fistula, and management of intestinal obstruction, perforated intestines, and accidental perforation of the abdomen with protrusion of omentum and the principles of fracture management, viz., manipulation, traction, apposition and stabilization including some measures of treatment and fitting of prosthetic. It details twelve varieties of fractures, six types of dislocations and classification of the bones and their reaction to the injuries, and gives a classification of eye diseases including cataract surgery. he was the founder of anesthesia. It contains lot in it that its not possible to describe here on just a blog. This text was translated to Arabic too as the name kitaab-i-susrud in 8th century.
